Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was both in Surrey, England on July 18, 1950. Dropping out of school at the age of 16, and decided to start a student-run magazine focusing on pop-culture called Student. In order to fund the magazine, Richard Branson decided to start a mail order record company, Virgin Records, that later climbed to success and is one of the top 6 record labels of all time.
However, Virgin Records isn’t all the Richard Branson is about. Branson’s Virgin Group holds over 400 companies in 30 countries including the US, the UK and Australia. His entrepreneurial spirit is not limited to the music industry, however; it has led him into businesses that include a luxury game preserve, a mobile phone company, and even Virgin Galactic – a space-tourism company.
In 2015, Branson was cited by Forbes magazine as the 12th richest Billionaire in the UK, with an estimated worth of a whopping $4.9 billion. However, he hasn’t always seen financial success. With his financial future hanging the balance in 1992, Richard Branson sold his first Virgin venture, his beloved Virgin Records for $1 billion. Though he was cited by multiple sources as crying over the deal, it did allow him to continue with his entrepreneurial spirit growing his Virgin name globally to what it is today. Total success!
Branson has also taken his adventurous nature to his personal life, making several attempts at world records throughout his years. Most notably, Branson crossed the Pacific in a balloon, breaking the record with a speed of 394 kilometres per hour in 1991. He also set a record for the fastest crossing of the English Channel in his amphibious vehicle in 2004, with a time of 1 hour 40 minutes and 6 seconds.
There seems to be nothing that Richard Branson won’t try and he will give it his all, but his passion lies in the world of travel. Though he continues his interested in space exploration and terrestrial travel, an unfortunate incident in 2014 that killed his test pilot due to a mid-air explosion, sent Branson back to Earth for his newest business endeavour – his 2015 announcement of Virgin Cruises.
Sir Richard Branson was knighted in 1999 for his work in entrepreneurship. He lives on Necter Island, an island he purchased in 1978 which is located in the British Virgin Islands. He is now of course a citizen of Great Britain. He resides there with his wife and 2 children, and continues his exceptional on-line presence as well as his adventurous entrepreneurial ventures and his building of the Virgin name.
