History Of Twitter
The history of twitter
Twitter is one of the most popular social networking sites used today, though it began as a micro-blogging platform for programmers who worked in Odeo Inc in San Francisco, California. Since its humble beginnings in March 2006, Twitter has come a long way. Its progress has surprised its own creators who never thought Twitter would come this far.
To truly understand how Twitter grew from a micro-blogging platform to a separate company by itself, we have to take a look into the history of twitter. On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey sent his first tweet: “just setting up my twtr.” These words were the beginning of a communication revolution, where people communicate in 140 characters or less with each other. Later that July, Twitter was officially launched with a video from the co-founder, Biz Stone.
How… When… Why???
When you think of the history of Twitter, the first question that springs in your mind is – how did Twitter get its name? The definition of Twitter is “a series of short, high-pitched calls or sounds,” according to the official dictionary. Since this meaning is close to the platform that offers a way for people to write short pieces of information, the name Twitter just stuck. The next interesting question in the history of twitter is – why only 140 characters? The reason is that SMS carriers offered a limit of 160 characters, and the founders wanted to leave some space for the username.
BOOM
Now that we know what Twitter means, and why it was started, it’s time to move on to its explosive growth over the last eight years or so. In April 2007, Twitter became a company, and by November 2008, Twitter passed the one billion tweet mark. By the time Twitter turned three, it had a massive growth of 1,382 percent year-after-year. In October 2009, Twitter passed the five billion tweet mark, and in January 2010, the first tweet was sent from the International Space Station by Astronaut Creamer, which wrote “Hello Twitterverse” “We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station – the 1st live tweet from Space! 🙂 More soon, send your ?s”
With such resounding success, Twitter began to introduce ads on its advertising platform called Promoted Tweets. Over the next two years, Twitter enhanced its user interface, added multimedia capabilities and changed its avatar. Along with these changes, its customer base and revenue from ads grew too.
One prominent event in the history of Twitter was the way it was used to oust former Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak. This platform helped to trigger one of the greatest revolutions the world has ever seen, the Arab Spring. Besides this event, Twitter has been used for everything – from keeping in touch with family and friends, to raising money for a noble cause and everything in between. Twitter, truly has come a long way from its early beginnings!
