Marketing your business in the 21st century

Marketing your business can be a very long and drawn out process, but at the end of the day, it’s what the whole game is all about. Successful marketing means sales, which mean profits. It’s a win-win!

To get that continuous flow of sales, sometimes you need to put in the long hours. Marketing means pushing your product or service to the fore of people’s minds, grabbing their attention, creating a big buzz, and drumming up an air of excitement. All of this means more people will buy into your idea, and boom – Big success!

These days, everything is geared towards the online world, and whilst there are many avenues in cyberspace to market your businesses, there are still a few old fashioned ways which are just as effective.

Let’s look at a few!

First things first – do your researchMarketing Your Business

Knowing where to target your sales is the first step to knowing where to aim your marketing ideas. You need to find out if there is a big enough hole in the market to aim your product or service towards. Understanding your potential customers and their buying habits inside out would help as well. What drives them to buy something? What do they find attractive about a product? These are so many important questions to find the answers to, so get onto it!

Market research may seem boring when you’re keen to get ahead and run your own business, but if you don’t do the groundwork, chances are, you’ll crash and burn. Look at existing statistics, talk to those in the industry already, talk to friends, family and even friends of friends, conduct surveys and do telephone interviews, every little bit helps. Use all the data you find to compile reports which will help you in your aims.

Social media

The internet is a powerful thing, so use it! Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, these are just three of the countless ways to push your idea and grab attention. Over the last few years social media has been the centre of controversy which got people’s attention, and attention means people are aware of your business. I’m not suggesting you cause a storm, but the idea is to create enough attention to keep people wanting more, asking questions, and drumming up interest.

Trade shows/exhibitions

This is the old fashioned way to get around marketing your business, but it has worked for many companies over the years. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it! Be attention grabbing – create a colourful, loud stand; stay energetic and keep moving around; have fun and give people something to talk about and something to remember you by.

Team up with another business

Now I’m not suggesting you and your nearest competitor hold hands, but if you can find a business that is similar to yours, but with key differences to stop one grabbing customers from the other, you could maybe link together to give each other business. For example, customers buy a service from the other business, and they get 10% of their next purchase with your business.

Competitions

Everyone loves to win a prize, and competitions have long been a way to cause a marketing buzz. The prize will of course be something linked to your business, to give potential customers a taste of what you’re offering in the hope they will return for more.

There are endless ways to push your business to the fore; all it takes is a little imagination.
